About the Project
Intent
Overgrown is a fast-paced resource management game in which players have to keep their multitude of houseplants alive. The player will do this in a succession of short and increasingly difficult levels until they become a master gardener capable of anything those pesky plants require. With short and fast gameplay sessions, Overgrown provides highly engaging gameplay at all times whenever the player feels like playing.
Gameplay Description
Overgrown takes place in three different houses where the player character has to care for various kinds of houseplants. The player character is a “plant babysitter” who is hired by homeowners when they go on vacation or otherwise have to leave home for a few days and need someone to care for their plants while they’re away. Each level will feature a different room layout with one of three house themes: a rural neighborhood, an urban city apartment, and a log cabin in the forest. Smaller levels may only consist of a single room, whereas larger levels will have multiple rooms which the player can freely walk between.
The objective of Overgrown is to move around each level and keep all the houseplants alive until the timer runs out. To keep the plants alive you must take care of specific resource needs for each plant, those being health, water, and sunlight. When these resources are properly met then the plant will be happy and healthy, however if one or multiple resources are not properly managed then the plant will begin to die. Keep all of the houseplants alive and healthy until the timer runs out in order to complete the level!
My Contribution
My contribution to Overgrown as Lead Designer mainly consisted of designing and implementing mechanics and systems, as well as doing quite a bit of bug fixing and polish work. Some specific tasks I completed on this project are designing the main mechanics and systems, level design and creation for 3 levels, designing achievements, writing tutorial dialogue, concepting UI layout, implementing/tweaking mechanics, implementing art assets, and recording and editing gameplay footage into trailers.
