About the Project
Intent
The intent of Discarnate is to create a virtual reality experience in which the player is fully immersed in the game world and is allowed to explore the map and solve puzzles at their own pace. It is meant for an older audience who enjoy games which are primarily focused on some kind of experience or deep storytelling. This audience enjoys games which can transport them into a new and exciting world, primarily fantasy, and tell an intriguing story without the use of gimmicky gameplay mechanics or basic combat.
Gameplay Description
Discarnate is a virtual reality experience in which the player experiences stories from multiple witches who have gathered around a fire in the middle of a glade preparing to perform a mysterious ritual. The player is taken into the mind of each witch one-by-one as they experience exactly what occurred in order to acquire the ingredients needed for the ritual; such as brewing a dangerous potion or searching a mystical cave for an ancient artifact. This virtual reality experience will allow players to be fully immersed in the game world and feel as if they really are experiencing the memories of each witch as they tell their story.
The first and only level in Discarnate is the Potion Dungeon. This dungeon is deep underground and is used by the witches as a place to grow various ingredients needed for brewing potions. It is comprised of a central large room which contains the cauldron used for brewing the potion, along with other various pieces of furniture and cabinets along the walls. Branching off of this main room are two smaller rooms, a storage room and an alchemy room. The storage room holds most of the ingredients the witches use for brewing their potions in various cabinets or on tables. The alchemy room holds a fire pit which is used for roasting ingredients, along with tables and various cooking equipment. In this level the player is tasked with finding each ingredient needed for the Potion of Vitality and correctly preparing it to be added to the cauldron.
My Contribution
On Discarnate I was responsible for a very wide variety of tasks. Due to the relatively short amount of time we had to develop this project and my diverse skill set I was able to help out not only on the design side of things, but also within programming and art as well. I was responsible for concepting the story and narrative, writing and upkeep of design documentation, designing the level layout, building the level in-engine, populating the level with assets, designing puzzles and gameplay mechanics, implementing mechanics in-engine, modeling 3D assets, and editing our gameplay trailer.
